 I'm a huge football fan and lately I have been looking at what makes a great coach and how they lead their team to victory. The coaches can't control all the aspects of the game but they can teach their players how to control their emotions and adapt to the pressure of the setting. One thing I myself have been trying to improve on, is my mental strength. All great athletes have a strong mental game.

Everyone has the desire to win, that’s nothing special; but do you have the will to work hard? In my experience, that is answered without true thought. Sure, everyone is willing to “Work Hard”, but when it starts getting real, the daily grind is hard, you have to push yourself every minute, every day and get through the tough days, are you dedicated enough to do it? Forget about every bad day and look forward to the next day. Very few realize the work and dedication it takes to train a great horse or become a great rider.

The pressure of seasoning colts often weighs heavily on a lot of people in the horse industry, myself included. I made it 15 years in the barrel industry without having to do the hard work of hauling a young one to see the sights and exhibition. By the time I started hauling mine, previous owners had taken them places whether it was local fun shows or trail rides.  It is so easy to get discouraged when you’re at a jackpot and your colt decides to act like it doesn’t even know how to steer or follow its nose in front of everyone watching because it’s too overwhelmed by everything happening around it. Now my seasoned horses have had some moments too, where I’ve come out of the arena wanting to just disappear into a hole or go back to my trailer and cry, I will be the first to admit. It’s not always pretty, but I have found that those moments are more abundant with a colt.
